Nelly Thea Köster is a director and musician.
In addition to her work as an independent theater maker, she has been realizing installations, site-specific performances, dance, theater, and film projects at the interface between art and society under her label cantina publica since 2008 in collaboration with choreographers, filmmakers, architects and visual artists. Her work is characterized by a strong visual language, dance and movement theater. She studied theater pedagogy and art history at the FH-Osnabrück and FH-Münster and at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem, NL.
Central themes of her work are the question of home and cultural identity.
In 2020-23 she directed the dance film productions The Truth - Du willst Deine Wut verbergen (2020) and Keines Menschen eigen (2021) in cooperation with Tanzpoeten/Tanztexte Münster and the Center for Literature Burg Hülshoff, which were shown at film festivals in Berlin, Genoa and Mexico and won the prize for best choreography at the Fuori Format Festival.
She sings, composes and writes the lyrics for her bands U Sha Eco, Choo Choo Panini, O mar e eo and the nujazz project ZouZoulectric on the Wuppertal label Chin Chin Records.
Nelly has a son and lives in Wuppertal and Berlin.
